Halmstads BK earned a valuable point in Gothenburg with a 1-1 draw against Örgryte IS in the Superettan. The point came after a goal drought lasting over three full matches and was first reported by Expressen.
How was the goal drought broken?
After failing to score for three and a half matches, Halmstads BK finally found the net again. Rocco Ascone equalized to make it 1–1 in the 38th minute following a fine assist from Hussein Carneil. Ascone chipped the ball over goalkeeper Hampus Gustafsson. Örgryte's opening goal had come earlier through Tobias Sana in the 24th minute, a goal that occurred after HBK defender André Boman slipped as the last man.
"We started weakly, but grew into the match and finished the half strongly," said Hussein Carneil after the match.
The first half was even, while the second half began as a stalemate with no clear chances. Noah Christoffersson had a good opportunity for Örgryte in the 74th minute but headed wide from a tight angle. The final minutes were dramatic with chances for both teams, including a save by Gustafsson from an Ascone shot in the 84th minute.
Where does Halmstads BK stand now?
The point does not change Halmstads BK's position in the Allsvenskan, where as of August 28, 2026, the club remains in 16th and last place. The team has only eight points from 18 rounds, with just one win, five draws, and twelve losses. The goal difference is 12 scored and 35 conceded, for a deficit of 23. The team is a full 34 points behind league leaders Sirius.
This difficult table position makes every point crucial, and the team faces a tough run of fixtures. According to the official fixtures list, matches against Kalmar, Degerfors, and IFK Göteborg await in the Allsvenskan. The next match, however, is at home against AIK Stockholm on September 20th, an AIK side currently sitting sixth in the table.
Who played in the match?
Halmstads BK lined up with Rönning in goal. The defensive line consisted of Boman, Wallentin, Gregor, and Kaib. The midfield featured Mäenpää, Allansson, Ascone, and Illary. The attack was led by Persson and Carneil. Örgryte IS, who remain second from bottom in the Allsvenskan and are two points from a relegation playoff spot, had Gustafsson in goal. Their starting eleven included Lagerlund, Dyrestam, Hammar, Andersson, Laturnus, Parker-Price, Paulsson, Hofvander, Christoffersson, and Sana.
Örgryte coach Andreas Holmberg now looks ahead to a derby match against IFK Göteborg. For Halmstads BK, it's about building on the positive feeling of scoring again. Tobias Sana, who is a close friend of Hussein Carneil, summed up the feeling for the home side: "A good day in the Superettan and the bounce would have been right, but when you're down there you get nothing for free."
